Some other mahjong rule sets used the following terms: manzu = characters, pinzu = dots, souzu = bamboo. That is absolutely fine.  However, we recommend learning these Japanese mahjong terms because most of the information you can find about riichi mahjong is in Japanese and this will help you understand more easily in the future.  Don’t worry if you cannot read Japanese; these mahjong terms are like a different language for most Japanese people, too.
